The wikia says that Mama came out before Tattletail (unsure if this is confirmed) and we still don't know if this is the incident that caused her to be recalled or if she already was. This is a fascinating theory! You think that they were afraid of the dark and Mama as a means of trickery tactics? It's just curious, because the ritual was SO INVOLVED! They seem to have ease of transport. I guess that wouldn't be much of a horror ending.

I wanted the end of the game to have a free play where you can just play with your Tattletails without any fear of mama, brushing and grooming them all and playing. In truth, this is what I think is the intent, but I don't really like it, only because the Tattletail are so cute and sweet. I think you were simply fooled by the toys, who mama created and made you trust/love so she could pursue you.

I imagine the ritual was actually, perhaps, transporting the Tattletails back to the toy shop for the cycle to repeat again, so she can find more children with their help. The theme song says 'you can play pretend with all his friends' the toy's whole name is 'Tattletail' which i think speaks to this creature existing purely as a tool for mama to track down children, because she can't see them, and needs the Tattletails help. I loved the Tattletails and I wanted them to be sincere very badly (I just want to feed and protect them!) but I do think the intention of the game is that they were tricking you the entire time.
